London Global Cancer Week 2025

Prof. Sheeba Irshad was invited to speak at the 2025 edition of the LGCW as part of a rapid-fire panel discussion on ethnic diversity in cancer research and clinical trials. The session highlighted the persistent barriers that many underrepresented groups face in accessing research opportunities and equitable cancer care, while also exploring strategies to make research more inclusive. A particularly impactful part of the conference was the session on lived experiences of cancer disparities, where patients shared personal accounts of navigating inequities within the healthcare system. These stories underscored the real-world consequences of disparities in cancer care, but also demonstrated the resilience and determination of individuals who have turned their experiences into advocacy. Speakers highlighted the importance of community engagement, culturally competent care, and building trust in healthcare. Several patient advocates have gone on to establish initiatives that raise awareness and provide support for others affected by cancer, including organisations such as From Me to You and the work of Louise McKenna-Mayes to improve representation and visibility for women living with breast cancer. Together, these discussions reinforced the importance of combining research, clinical practice, and patient voices to advance cancer equity.
